On this debut album from the Welsh singer/songwriter David Gray, his acoustic
guitar playing is quite good and his lyrics are very personal and topical. "Shine"
sounded just like a Van Morrison tune with its mystical musings about love and his
vocal style on "Wisdom" reminded me of Mike Scott. His influences seem to
overshadow his identity, which is unfortunate since Gray's intense vocal delivery (a
heavy, passionate growl) and serious lyrics point to a major talent about to emerge
on the folk music scene.
